Popelyuk Adult Psychiatry

consultant adult psychiatrists in private practice

in London

I am a Consultant Psychiatrist based at Nightingale Hospital in Marylebone and provide easy and reliable access to diagnosis, effective treatment and the best patient experience for people suffering from mental health problems.

I studied medicine at Odessa Medical University and trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley and Royal Free Hospitals in London, specialising in general adult psychiatry, rehabilitation psychiatry, personality disorders, psychotherapy and psychosexual medicine.

I believe in the continuity of patient care. Therefore, I provide assessment and treatment in any setting, whether it is at the patient's home remotely, outpatients clinic or in hospital.

I have two associate consultant psychiatrists, both highly experienced, working alongside me at my clinic, Dr Anna Streeruwitz and Dr Marianna Leontis. We can offer both in person and video appointments with all our psychiatrists.

mental health

With over 15 years of providing care for people with psychiatric conditions, I have the knowledge and experience to treat the full range of mental health conditions in adults.

I combine pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches using my background in mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

I offer pharmacogenomic testing to establish patient’s genetic makeup, predict response to treatment and to determine which medication (and which dosage) is the optimal choice.

When appropriate, I can provide other treatments such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). I work closely with other clinicians to ensure continuity of care, making referrals as necessary.

Regardless of the type or the causes of the problem, I believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms of a disease.

Conditions I commonly treat:

  • Anxiety and OCD

  • Depression (including treatment-resistant depression)

  • Bipolar disorders

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Self-harm and suicidal feelings

  • Personality disorders

  • Drug induced psychosis, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder

  • Alcohol and drug addictions

Sexual Problems

their intimate life

The majority of sexual problems are caused by a mixture of physical and psychological factors. Therefore, my treatment approach is an integrated treatment programme that combines specialist medical and psychotherapeutic interventions to achieve the best outcomes.

I am an expert in dealing with sexual problems of all degrees of complexity; however, my particular expertise is helping people with complex and enduring sexual difficulties associated with chronic physical and mental health conditions.

I worked as an NHS consultant psychiatrist at the national psychosexual service at the Maudsley Hospital between 2009 and 2017, where I led a team of doctors and psychologists.

Common sexual difficulties I can help with:

  • Lack or loss of sexual desire

  • Sexual aversion

  • Difficulties with achieving and maintaining erection

  • Premature, delayed ejaculation and non-ejaculation

  • Painful sex (vaginismus and dyspareunia)

  • Anorgasmia

  • Hypersexual disorder / sexual addiction

  • Other disorders related to sexuality and sexual functioning

  • Intimate relationship disharmony

  • Psychological or physical problems following sexual abuse or violence (psychosexual rehabilitation)

  • Problematic sexual preferences that could result in physical or emotional damage to patient and/or their sexual partner(s)

Gender Identity

Gender Identity

for people seeking help and advice

for gender issues

Gender dysphoria is a condition where a person experiences discomfort or distress because there is a mismatch between their biological sex and their perceived gender identity. Whilst biological sex is assigned at birth, gender identity is the gender that a person 'identifies' with or feels themselves to be. A person may therefore express their gender in range of ways - as gender variant, transgender, transsexual, transvestite, genderqueer, androgynous or intersex.

Gender dysphoria is not the same as transvestism or cross-dressing and is not related to sexual orientation. A person can identify as straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or asexual and their sexual orientation can change as treatment and transition progresses.

Sometimes the discomfort or distress caused by this mismatch is so strong that a person feels the need to seek help in order to discuss their feelings and receive diagnosis and support from an experienced professional in this field.

I offer advice and support to people with issues surrounding their gender identity, including:

  • Initial diagnosis and assessment

  • Ongoing treatment and support

  • Assistance with accessing hormone therapy

  • Advice on transition

  • Advice and referral for hair removal, gender surgery, feminising and masculinising surgical procedures and sexual health issues

  • Gender recognition certificate (GRC) reports
