FAQs:

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to book an appointment and may self-refer directly.

We also accept referrals from GPs, NHS services, psychologists, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

Please note that some private medical insurers require a referral and pre-authorisation. Patients should confirm requirements with their insurer prior to booking.

Who will conduct my assessment?

All assessments and treatment are provided by consultant psychiatrists registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).

You will be seen by Dr Popelyuk or one of the clinic’s associate consultant psychiatrists, depending on clinical suitability and availability.

What happens during the initial consultation?

The initial consultation involves a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, including a review of current symptoms, relevant personal and medical history, and previous treatments.

Where appropriate, diagnostic impressions and treatment options will be discussed. Recommendations are based on clinical judgement and available evidence.

How long does an initial consultation last?

Initial psychiatric assessments typically last 50–60 minutes.

Follow-up appointments are usually 30 or 60 minutes, depending on clinical need.

How many appointments are required for a diagnosis?

This depends on the nature and complexity of the presentation. In some cases, a diagnosis may be reached following a single assessment.

In others, further appointments may be required to ensure diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.

Do you offer video consultations?

Secure video consultations are available where clinically appropriate.

Some assessments, examinations, or prescribing decisions may require an in-person appointment.

Do you provide ADHD assessments?

Yes. We provide specialist assessment and treatment for adult ADHD in line with recognised clinical standards.

Assessments involve structured diagnostic interviews and include a written diagnostic report.
Further details are available on the ADHD service page.

Do you provide treatment as well as assessment?

Yes. Where appropriate, we offer ongoing treatment, including medication management and psychological approaches. Continuity of care and regular clinical review form part of our practice

Do you accept private medical insurance?

Popelyuk Adult Psychiatry primarily operates on a self-pay basis.

We are recognised by a limited number of international and specialist insurers, subject to clinician recognition and individual policy terms.

Which insurers recognise Popelyuk?

We are currently recognised by:

• WPA
• Bupa International
• SIGNA

Recognition does not guarantee reimbursement. Patients must confirm eligibility and authorisation directly with their insurer prior to booking.

Do you accept UK-based Bupa or AXA policies?

No. We do not accept standard UK Bupa or AXA Health policies.

Patients insured under UK-based schemes will usually need to proceed on a self-funded basis.

Do I need a referral if I am using insurance?

In most cases, yes. Insurers typically require:

• A GP or clinician referral
• Pre-authorisation from the insurer
• Confirmation of clinician recognition

Please check your policy requirements before booking.

What information do I need to provide if using insurance?

If you intend to claim via insurance, please provide in advance:

• Insurer name
• Policy or membership number
• Pre-authorisation code
• Referrer details If this information is not provided, the appointment will proceed as self-pay.

Are all services covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by insurer and policy. Typically:

• Initial assessments may be considered
• Follow-up appointments are often limited
• Reports, letters, medication, and non-clinical services are usually not covered

Patients remain responsible for any fees not reimbursed.

Do you offer self-pay appointments?

Yes. Most patients are seen on a self-funded basis.

Self-pay appointments offer clear, fixed fees with no insurer restrictions or approval delays.

What are your fees?

Fees vary depending on appointment type and duration.

Current fees are available on the Appointments and Fees page or on request.

How is payment made?

Payment is required in advance of the appointment.

Payment details are provided at the time of booking.

Can you guarantee a diagnosis or specific treatment?

No. Diagnoses and treatment recommendations cannot be guaranteed in advance.

All clinical decisions are made following assessment and are based on professional judgement and available evidence.

Will I receive a written report?

Written reports are provided for certain assessments, including ADHD assessments.

For other consultations, written summaries may be provided where clinically appropriate or on request.

Will you communicate with my GP or other professionals?

With your consent, we can liaise with your GP or other healthcare professionals.

Shared-care arrangements may be considered where appropriate, subject to GP agreement.

Do you undertake medico-legal or expert witness work?

Some clinicians undertake medico-legal assessments and prepare expert reports.

Availability, scope, and fees should be discussed in advance.
